Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend opening ceremony of Asian Games
Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend opening ceremony of Asian Games: Along with other visiting leaders, Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, official media said on Thursday.
President Xi “will hold a welcome banquet and bilateral activities for foreign leaders visiting China in addition to attending the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 22 to September 23,” according to official broadcaster CCTV.
Assad, who is making his first trip to China since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, will be joined by dignitaries from allies Cambodia, Kuwait, and Nepal, among others, according to CCTV.
The rigorous zero-COVID policy in China caused the Games, which were scheduled for September of last year, to be postponed until the governing Communist Party quickly changed its mind.
The Games, which were originally held in New Delhi in 1951, are in their 19th edition and include athletes from 45 nations and territories in Asia and the Middle East.
